The Government of the Republic of Indonesia presented the Nomination File of Indonesian Batik to UNESCO Office, Jakarta
The representatives of the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Welfare on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the community of Indonesian Batik presented to the UNESCO Office in Jakarta the Nomination File of Indonesian Batik for consideration for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 4 September 2008.
Hubert Gijzen, Director and Representative of UNESCO Office, Jakarta, Himalchuli Gurung and Masanori Nagaoka Programme Specialists for Culture attended the official handover of the Nomination File of Indonesian Batik at UNESCO Office, Jakarta.
This nomination file has been prepared with full participation of the batik communities from many Provinces of Indonesia to meet the spirit of the UNESCO 2003 Convention on Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the relevant Operational Guidelines, to which Indonesia has become a State Party in January 2008.
In order to provide stakeholders with the information of the 2003 Convention, the UNESCO Office in Jakarta organized a two-day workshop jointly with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO in Jakarta, Indonesia on 17-18 April 2008.
The nomination file will be examined for the inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in due course.
